Drug Rehab

"Primary drug treatment is the beginning of the healing process, not the end," said another Cliffside clinician. "At Cliffside Malibu, we understand that our clients trust us to help them get better forever, and we do everything in our power to do exactly that. Our commitment to sober living is a product of that underlying philosophy."

Comfort Detox

Your detox program can only succeed to the extent that it helps your body recover from the physical dependencies associated with addiction in a safe, supportive environment. Drug addiction works by warping an addict’s metabolism so that he or she literally needs drugs to sustain normal systemic function. Drug and alcohol detoxification both work by gently weaning your body off of drugs and drug chemicals, thus allowing for the restoration of normal metabolic function. Remember, “comfort detox “ doesn’t have to be a contradiction in terms. At Cliffside Malibu, our detoxification programs aim to make detox fast and gentle, so as to better prepare addicts to face the challenges that lie ahead. Detox, even from opiates, is only painful if it isn’t done well. At Cliffside Malibu, we know how to make it work. For your own sake, here’s hoping you find the courage to let us show you. ~Cliffside Malibu

A few great reads...

Some really great piece were written about the importance of drug rehabs and the services they offer, here are a few great reads:

Understanding The Detox Process

'...The most effective drug detox center is the one that understands the importance of long-term healing. Drug detox and recovery doesn't happen overnight, after all. On the contrary, detox patients need intensive support over the course of many months in order to get better. In the end, anything less is and can only be a recipe for failure...(more)'

The Most Exclusive Drug Treatment Center Is Also The Most Effective

On the contrary, drug treatment patients need intensive support over the course of many months in order to get better. In the end, anything less is and can only be a recipe for failure.

Holistic Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center in California

'...Cliffside Malibu's commitment to the long-term health of its clients is beyond question. But not all drug treatment centers share Cliffside's philosophy. In fact, many of the most well-known clinics in the Los Angeles area focus almost exclusively on the short-term successes of their patients-with obvious and often disastrous consequences for those patients' long-term health.

Cliffside administrators, for their part, have always believed that those sorts of deficiencies are absolutely unacceptable...(more)'

Q: 'What makes one drug treatment center different from the next?'

A: Finding the right drug treatment center is, to say the least, a difficult process. Indeed, it’s hard enough to even admit that you need drug treatment in the first place; checking yourself into drug rehab means admitting that you have a problem, and admitting that you can’t solve it on your own. But that’s only the first step of the journey.

Asking yourself the right questions on your search like 'How can I find a drug treatment center that’s right for me?' (read more)is another tough step.

The good news, for starters, is that diversity isn’t a bad thing. The number of drug treatment centers in California in general and in Los Angeles in particular ensures that drug addicts have a range of options in choosing among drug rehab facilities.

There is, simply put, something for everybody. The only trick is knowing how to find it.

Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse

'Alcoholism is a disease. It’s a fact that too many people forget, when they talk about alcoholics and alcohol abuse. It is not a choice, or a function of personal will. Alcoholics aren’t alcoholics because they choose to be; they’re alcoholics because they’re sick, and because their sickness outstrips anything that might ever be called their personal will. The flipside, of course, is that no victim of alcoholism can ever simply choose to get better. As alcoholism is a disease, so is clinical alcohol treatment vital to an addict’s prospects for long-term recovery. No one beats alcohol dependency alone...(more)'

Health and Wellness News: Clinical Success With Alcohol Treatment

Eating Disorder Treatment

To view the full press release article, please click here:

'...It's one thing for an eating disorder treatment center to pay lip service to the importance of long-term recovery. It's quite another for that facility to live up to its own standards. The truth is that many of the most high-priced eating disorder treatment centers in Los Angeles abandon their clients long before the healing process is complete. Unsurprisingly, these institutions generally fall far short of the promises they make in the advertising literature.

For recovery patients and their families, say Cliffside administrators, that sort of failure is unacceptable.

"Our clients trust us to save their lives," said Cliffside's Clinical Director. "We're both humbled and inspired by the responsibility, and we do everything in our power to meet our obligations. Any eating disorder treatment center that isn't prepared to make that commitment doesn't deserve to be in business."...' (Cliffside Malibu)

What Do You See?

Even some of the most self abuse does not constitute hospitalization. Most insurance will not pay for it anyways. Eating disorders can be so addictive that the chances of stopping them with outpatient treatment are nearly impossible. This is why Eating Disorder Treatment is such a great alternative. Most Eating Disorder Treatments take place on an inpatient basis. Some people like to attempt outpatient treatment first but the problem with that is that it is often insufficient or the severity of your eating disorder may be too advanced for outpatient facilities to accommodate it, you might need a more structured and intense program, and also outpatient therapy can cost a lot of money and many patients require repeated hospitalizations. Residential treatment offers clinical care around the clock in an environment that is much more relaxed. It is much more affordable and you are not in a hospital setting. You will never get short changed on help while we are treating you nor will your level of care ever be compromised at any time. It is very important to check out a number of places before you make concrete plans but we are confident that you will return to us because we are the best and we can offer you the best care possible.

Read this great article about Cliffside Malibu:

(To read the whole article click here)

.....Many private treatment facilities offer a primary drug treatment programs to their clients. But only the most elite and effective drug treatment programs invest sufficient resources in their sober living services. In fact, many of the most well-known drug treatment programs in Los Angeles provide marginal or even inferior sober living options for their residents. Unsurprisingly, those facilities routinely fall short of the promises they make in their advertising brochures.

For recovery patients and their families, say Cliffside administrators, that sort of failure is unacceptable.

"Primary drug treatment is the beginning of the healing process, not the end," said another Cliffside clinician. "At Cliffside Malibu, we understand that our clients trust us to help them get better forever, and we do everything in our power to do exactly that. It's relatively easy to find effective drug treatment programs in Los Angeles for short term recovery. It's much harder, though, to find a luxury drug rehab facility offering norco treatment that genuinely cares about the long-term health of its clients. The caregivers at Cliffside Malibu are remarkable both for their professional expertise and for their personal passion. As Cliffside's successful graduates have learned firsthand, that combination can make all the difference in the world.

I Am Death

Hello new friend, my name is DEATH, some still call me Meth.

I'm easy to find, and a breeze to make.

Just ask around, I will make you feel great.

Try me for free, I can afford one hit.

I know if you do, I am hard to quit.

Forget those who love you, I am all you will need.

Take my hand, to your death I will lead.

I have no conscience, grief is my soul.

I will not leave you, until your body is cold.

You will meet new people, I am social you see.

I'll teach you to lie, steal, and cheat.

Your new group of friends, they know me well.

And if we get caught, they will leave you in hell.

I am important, I am the best.

I make some rich, then I destroy the rest.

I'll keep you awake, unable to work.

I make mothers cry, some call me a jerk.

If you have children, or someone you love.

I can destroy them, I am Meth, the Death Drug.

Don't look in the mirror, you won't believe what you see.

The reflection looking back, some say it is me.

I'll rot your teeth, I'll destroy your gums.

But just remember, you are having fun.

You may not even notice the change.

Your mind will not function as it did before I came.

Once you are mine, and you have lost everything.

Don't curse my name, you came looking for me.

I'm very possesive, I'll take your life.

And if you don't believe me, Keep doing ICE.

Now that you know me, and we are friends.

KNOW I AM DEATH, will you love me to the end?

A grieving Mother,
Christy

Best Inpatient Alcohol Rehab Center

I found this article about Cliffside Malibu, and had to share.....

A few good words

I found this testimonial about Cliffside Malibu- I felt the word needed to be shared:

Thank you for all your help, support and humor during my stay at Cliffside. It was an incredible experience, one I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams (just like you said!). Getting sober is an incredible trip. It is so much more fun tripping out on life instead of drugs or alcohol. There’s a whole new world that has opened up for me and being able to show up for myself and life is one of the most exciting parts of recovery.Once I got to Cliffside I was so relieved to not have to try to handle my addictions on my own and I couldn’t remember what I had been so fearful about. You really made the transition easy and filled with fun. At first I was wary about being judged and couldn’t admit to myself the severity of my problem. I was gripping onto substances for dear life as it was the only way I knew how to get through situations. I was scared of not being able to handle getting sober but you were always there as a positive resource with a wealth of insight. Being fearful of my own demons no longer worried me as they were already present weather I wanted them to be or not. It was so much easier to deal with them in such a great environment. It was nice to be somewhere where I was not just another number but at a place that took into consideration my personal needs (needs I didn’t even know I had). But now I’ve learned an alternative way to deal with my life and am learning to make myself happy. And it was all thanks to you and the great team of support and understanding that I got during my stay. The whole process of recovery is mind-blowing as I learned more about myself and how to deal with situations and people that used to make me nervous. I feel like the world is my oyster and there for the taking now that I’m more aware and able to be present for life and have expanded my horizons. Things now seem within reach for me if I want them as I’m not tied down and limited to the narrow scope of drugs and alcohol. It’s so refreshing to be released from the nagging problem of how to maintain my addictions and to spend my time & money doing fun things that I’d always wanted to. I thought alcohol and drugs helped me through my difficulties until I finally realized they were my difficulties and made life more difficult. Once I learned to count on myself and my H.P. instead of mind altering substances, I feel that I can face life with new found courage which is a refreshing feeling. And I have you all to thank for helping me through the journey of self discovery and dealing with the multifacets of life. Thanks for being there and helping me through my fears and rough patches.

Lots of love, Anonymous

How can I find a drug treatment center that’s right for me?

Unfortunately, the search for the right California drug rehab center is often a challenging one. Drug addiction is a complex foe, one that demands a breadth of treatment strategies and recovery options.

Good drug rehab programs offer a wide array of approaches to alcohol treatment and drug rehab. The most effective drug rehab programs treat both an individual’s addiction and the addiction’s underlying causes, the better to ensure that a patient can get sober and stay sober for the rest of his life. Drug rehab should also include services and programs to help patients become functional members of society. Finally, California drug rehab centers, or at least California drug rehab centers that are worth their salt, must address the overall mental health of the clients.

Anything less just isn’t good enough.

But that’s still a lot of words without much direction. So effective drug rehab programs must provide a wide range of drug treatment options, and teach life skills to recovering drug addicts, and address the mental health of their patients—but what does that mean, exactly? What is addiction, even, and how does it work? More importantly, what does it mean to fight the root causes of addiction itself, and how do drug rehab programs help addicts rediscover life as they used to know it?

Eating Disorders

Many people are not certain if they have an eating disorder. This is likely because they do not know a lot About Eating Disorders. Eating disorders can be many things but they are always extreme. They are obvious disturbances in eating behaviors that are marked by extreme overeating (Binging and purging) also known as Bulimia or an extreme lack of food intake to the point of starvation which is known as Anorexia. There is usually always an extreme concern surrounding the body, how much you weight and what shape you are. It is a compulsion that is thought about constantly. Does this sound like you? Do you starve yourself because when you look in the mirror you see a horrible fat person? Does the thought of eating something make you panic to where you get physically ill? Do you binge excessively and are you out of control? Do you eat everything in sight until you can not eat any more only to vomit afterwards? Do you ever chew the food just so you can taste it but never ever swallow it? Do you hide any of these things from friends and family? These are some of the indicators that you likely have an eating disorder.

The understanding of this disease remains elusive and scientific research finds this disease very complex, at the least. Besides anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, a third type of eating disorder has been specified, EDNOS, which stands for “eating disorders not otherwise specified. These are often combination eating disorders or can include variations. If any of this sounds like you please seek help immediately. Call Cliffside Malibu at 1-800-501-1988

Poetry is the soul speaking

When writing poetry you allow your soul to speak, it doesn't always rhyme, it doesn't always make sense but when you are done, you feel restored, relieved, as if a weight has been lifted off your shoulders, as if you can breathe deeply again.

If you aren't artistically inclined this may be an excellent method to relieve your self of unknown emotional issues and aide in your growth and healing along the way.

Rapid Detox- Just say 'NO'

I wanted to take the time to teach you a little about rapid opiate detox plans, I for one will never condone using one. But I will let the facts stack up for you to make your own decision.

"Procedures, like Rapid Detox, that require anesthesia and intubation should only be performed in an intensive care unit of an acute hospital, never in a clinic. Accredited hospitals take every possible precaution to ensure patient safety and access to urgent medical resources if needed." (Opiates.com)- Good to know that if things don't go right, you're at least in the right place to be saved....hopefully.

"Studies have also shown however, that the procedure can lead to risk of death, psychosis, increased stress, delirium, attempted suicide, abnormal heart rhythm and acute renal failure." (Addiction Research)

"Rapid detox only treats the physical aspect of addiction, not the psychological side, which is a major component of addiction. After rapid detox, you need extended psychological counseling to treat the mental aspect of addiction, otherwise there is a great risk of relapse." (Rapid Detox Las Vegas)- So much for your quick fix to addiction.

"
...Rapid detox comes with a litany of risks. Treatment is considered experimental, so no insurance carrier will pay for the procedure...Contrary to popular belief, an addict doesn't just nap eight hours, dress and head home...The single biggest risk to a patient during rapid detox is absorbing and tolerating the general anesthesia that allows the body to sleep during the infusion. To give you an idea of how high this risk can be, compare one death for every 250,000 people receiving general anesthesia for surgery to one death in every 10,000 as a result of rapid detox... In addition to alarming fatality numbers, rapid detox patients regularly suffer serious thyroid problems following treatment." (eHow.com) - where do I sign up? Not.

These are only a few things to consider, for me they are enough. While the traditional method isn't the easiest, it is the safest and the goal is to have a life after not worry about medical issues or worse death. Cliffside Malibu "will also do everything that they can to make sure that your experience is as comfortable as possible".

Musical Assistance

I found a list of 21 songs about drug addictions and/or overcoming the addiction. Some of these artists have been known for going in and out of rehab. Some of them sung about a loved one that suffered. I am sure you have heard at least 1 if not several of these tunes, some of them you can relate to, others you can think of someone who would think its their story. Sometimes hearing the right song helps a person understand their situation or circumstance.
(List Courtesy of
Random mode @ TheCheers)

1. Wasting Away In Margaritaville: Jimmy Buffet

"Blew out my flipflop, stepped on a poptop
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home,
But there's booze in the blender,
And soon it will render,
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on.
Yes, some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
And I know it's my own damn fault."

2. Every Breath You Take: The Police

"Oh, cant you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every breath you take

Every move you make

Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you"

3.White Lines: Grandmaster Flash

"Ticket to ride, white line highway
Tell all your friends, they can go my way
Pay your toll, sell your soul
Pound for pound costs more than gold
The longer you stay, the more you pay
My white lines go a long way
Either up your nose or through your vein
With nothin to gain except killin' your brain"

4. One More Addiction: Natalie Imbruglia

"First the good news
Its gonna feel very nice
Then the bad news
You gotta pay a heavy price

Rip tide,we slide we ride on a deep forbidden sea
Under we go-so slow
And you're hanging onto me"

5. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds: The Beatles

"Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain,
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies.
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
That grow so incredibly high.

Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,
Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
And you're gone."

6. The Crystal Ship: The Doors

"Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
Deliver me from reasons why
You'd rather cry, I'd rather fly

The crystal ship is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back, I'll drop a line"

7. Cocaine: Eric Clapton

"If you got bad news, you wanna kick them blues; cocaine.
When your day is done and you wanna run; cocaine.
She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie; cocaine."

8. Joey: Concrete Blond

"Joey, honey - I got some money
All is forgiven. listen, listen
And if I seem to be confused
I didn't mean to be with you.
And when you said I scared you,
Well I guess you scared me too.
But we got lucky once before
And if you're somewhere out there
Passed out on the floor.
Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore."

9. Truckin: The Grateful Dead

"Sometimes the lights all shinin on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip its been.

What in the world ever became of sweet jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Livin on reds, vitamin c, and cocaine,
All a friend can say is ain't it a shame? "

10. Hotel California: The Eagles

"Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
'Relax,' said the night man,
'We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave"

11. Because I Got High: Afroman

"I messed up my entire life because I got high
I lost my kids and wife because I got high

now I'm sleeping on the sidewalk and I know why
- cause I got high
I'm gonna stop singing this song because I'm high
I'm singing this whole thing wrong because I'm high
and if I don't sell one copy I know why
- cause I'm high"

12. She Talks To Angels: The Black Crowes

"She never mentions the word addiction
In certain company
Yes, she'll tell you she's an orphan
After you meet her family

She paints her eyes as black as night, now
Pulls those shades down tight
Yeah, she gives a smile when the pain comes,
The pains gonna make everything alright"

13. Lithium: Nirvana

"I'm so happy. Cause today I found my friends.
They're in my head. I'm so ugly. But that's ok.
'Cause so are you. We've broke our mirrors.
Sunday morning. Is everyday for all I care.
And I'm not scared. Light my candles.
In a daze cause I've found god."

14. Under The Bridge: Red Hot Chili Peppers

"Under the bridge downtown
Is where I drew some blood
Under the bridge downtown
I could not get enough
Under the bridge downtown
Forgot about my love
Under the bridge downtown
I gave my life away"

15. Rehab: Amy Winehouse

I'm not gonna spend ten weeks
have everyone think I'm on the mend

It's not just my pride
It's just 'til these tears have dried"

16.Numb: U2

"Gimme some more
A piece of me, baby
I feel numb
Don't plead
Don't bridle
Don't shackle
Don't grind Gimme some more
Don't curve
Don't swerve I feel numb
Lie, die, serve Gimme some more
Don't theorize, realise, polarise I feel numb
Chance, dance, dismiss, apologise Gimme what you got
Gimme what I don't get
Gimme what you got
Too much is not enough"

17. Purple Haze: Jimi Hendrix

Don't know if its day or night
You got me blowin, blowin my mind
Is it tomorrow, or just the end of time?"

18. Hurt: Nine Inch Nails (Also redone by Johnny Cash)

"I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything"

19. Comfortably Numb: Pink Floyd

"Ok.
Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more --aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.

Can you stand up?
I do believe its working good.
That'll keep you going for the show.
Come on its time to go."

20. Heroin: Velvet Underground

"Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, its my wife and its my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off and dead
Because when the smack begins to flow
I really don't care anymore"

21. I'm Not An Addict: K's Choice

"The deeper you stick it in your vein

The deeper the thoughts there's no more pain
I'm in heaven, I'm a god
I'm everywhere, I feel so hot
It's not a habit, it's cool
I feel alive
If you don't have it you're on
the other side
I'm not an addict (maybe that's a lie)"

Empty

The stores in this town are empty and dark.
It is cold and gray and silent.
I have been brought here in a like state, dumped here like a bag of garbage.
My soul has been poured out to so many thirsty beggers,
but there is no faucet to fill what is empty.
I am as useless to society as an old Coke can.
There are no discussions of half-full or half-empty.
I am just empty.
So what can this town give to this dried up girl?
There are no sounds. No things. No lights.
But there are people.
There are people who are bleeding out the moisture that I so desperately need.
They have a source that seems to never end.
I drink. I breath. I am nourished.
These people. They are my friends.
They have given me the answer to life.
They have shown me a faucet that never dries.
I can give and always be filled.
I am alive.
I am saved.

(*Authors notes: I was sent....to enter a treatment program for anorexia. My soul was dried up...Little did I know that I would meet the people who saved my life and changed my existence. Perhaps this poem doesn't make any sense to you, but it was therapeutic to write down the memories of the first day...) ~

Drug Rehab Voices of Recovery: A Mothers Story

She knows what addiction looks like. She is widowed and happily remarried, but the father of her four children was a heavy drinker throughout their twenty-three year marriage.

But Barbara had never heard of cocaine, except on the news. And an alcoholic and a crack addict are two entirely different things. Unfortunately, Barbara's second youngest son, Matt, was both. But it was crack that changed the lives of her family and landed her son in drug rehab.

Matt's addiction only lasted for a year and a half. After only a few months, the family discovered the problem and hired an interventionist and got help, Addiction is frightening for most people and sometimes you don't even know where to start. "The intervention itself was a great beginning, a way for the whole family to pull together and deal with this thing as one. Without that, I'm not sure that we could have gotten Matt to go to drug rehab at all."

Matt entered a local thirty day drug rehab facility shortly thereafter. Things looked good for a while, but his relapse floored the family once again. "We were devastated. We had already all been through so much; we thought the whole thing was over. It was not."

Six months later, Matt entered another drug rehab program. This time it was non-traditional model which offered a more holistic approach. And it worked. The program took Matt several months to complete but, in the end, the former crack addict and alcoholic got clean. He now works with others who struggle with addiction to get them the help they need.

"Not knowing where Matt was, what he was doing, if he was safe--it was like living in a tunnel of horror. When he went to drug rehab it gave me hope, not only that he would overcome his addiction, but that he would find his place in this world. I believe that has happened. When my son was on drugs, it was a complete nightmare--drug rehab changed my life as well as his. I went from being the most scared person on this earth, scared that I would lose him, to someone who can sleep at night." ~By Matt H. - 2007-09-14

A Hero

He sits alone
in his room
dreaming
of being more
he dreams of times
that have never existed
outside of a book
he closes his eyes
and he says
'I want to be a hero'

She sits alone
thinking about everything
wishing
she had someone
to save the day
someone that doesn't exist
inside her world
she closes her eyes
and she says
'I need a hero'

They sit alone
within sight of
each other
wishing for something
that will never be
wanting what is just
out of reach
they close their eyes
and they say
'I want to be...'
'I need...'
